The Whitevale and District Residents’ Association (WDRA) is made up loyal residents of Whitevale who are extremely proud of their village and are intent on maintaining its unique historic character. The WDRA was formed in 1972 at the time that the government was expropriating land in-and-around Whitevale for construction of an airport. Since the beginning, the WDRA’s objectives have been: To protect, promote and enhance the heritage of Whitevale and its surrounding agricultural land; To protect, promote and enhance the social, cultural and recreational interests of the people of Whitevale and district; and To cooperate with any organization or person which this Association recognizes as having aims consistent with its own.

Whitevale Corn Roast & Porchfest

Join us for the annual Whitevale Corn Roast and the 3rd annual Whitevale Porchfest on Saturday September 21, 2019 from 12 noon to 5PM. A kids’ singalong starts at 11AM.

The Whitevale Corn Roast is an annual event held at St. Joseph’s Orthodox Church (Whitevale Church). Enjoy delicious corn on the cob, soulaki and homemade desserts.

Whitevale Porchfest is a free music event where performers and musicians take to the porches of homes in the historic hamlet of Whitevale. Stroll through the quaint village and listen to a variety of musicians performing on porches.

Master Drainage Plan – 30% Design Drawings

Background

In 2013, the City completed their Whitevale Master Drainage Plan – Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Report.  The recommendations from the report are as follows:

Intermittent Drainage Feature – Storm Flow Diversion to Whitevale Road Storm Sewer

  • Minor re-grading of the roadside ditch on the east side of North Road to accommodate a portion of the flood flows from the catchment area to the north.
  • Construction of new driveway culverts and a new storm inlet to the Whitevale Road storm sewer.
  • Install new Whitevale Road storm sewer, with increased size to accommodate the additional peak flows from North Road.
  • Replace the existing culvert crossing at North Road in order to convey low flows to the existing drainage feature.

North Road -Resurfacing & Grading

  • Re-surface asphalt road surface in order to reduce erosion and sediment discharging to the Whitevale  Road storm sewer system
  • Carry out minor re-grading along west roadside ditch in order to re-establish proper drainage and install / replace several driveway culverts to facilitate property access

Whitevale Road (East) – Rural Reconstruction

  • Replace the existing road with a new paved rural cross-section and grass ditches, similar to the  current road width.
  • Adjust the road profile to establish proper drainage and minimize flooding of  adjacent properties.
  • Construct a new storm sewer with properly spaced ditch inlets to prevent surface  flooding and erosion.

Whitevale Road (West) – Resurfacing

  • Re-surface asphalt road surface in order to reduce erosion and sediment discharging to West Duffins Creek.
  • Carry out minor re-grading along north roadside ditch in order to re-establish proper drainage and  reduce erosion of the granular shoulder.
  • Re-instate misaligned segment of storm sewer near outfall.
  • Replace the damaged storm sewer outfall with new structure & construct additional outlet enhancements (e.g., outlet pool) in order to improve storm runoff quality and reduce erosion within the valley.
  • Remove debris blockages identified at several manhole / ditch inlet locations.

Local Residential Roads – Local Road Improvements

  • Maintain the existing unpaved rural cross-section
  • Carry out local grading works (i.e. profile, road crown, ditches, etc.) to re-establish proper drainage and minimize flooding of adjacent properties.
  • Regular maintenance.

Update:

The city has confirmed that the implementation of the Master Drainage Plan will NOT take place in 2019 despite the original plan.

The detailed design is currently at 30% completion.  The current work scope includes:

North Road

  • Reconstruct road
  • Remove sidewalk on west side
  • Remove trees on east side, including many mature trees
  • Increase size of ditch on east side

Whitevale Road (East)

  • Reconstruct road with rural section
  • Remove sidewalk on south side
  • Remove select trees on south side

Whitevale Road (West)

  • Resurface road
  • No change to current configuration (i.e. no new sidewalks, curbs or ditch configuration)

Local Residential Roads

  • No changes or resurfacing are planned for Byron, Factory, Mill, Churchwin, Gladstone and Golf Club roads

Response to Bill 66: Restoring Ontario’s Competitiveness Act

Duffins Rouge Agricultural PreserveBill 66 could be a major threat to the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve

Legislation is currently in development that could be a major threat to the Rouge-Duffins Agricultural Preserve.

Why should we care? Because half of Whitevale is located within the Preserve.

For those of you not familiar with the Preserve, it is bounded by Hwy 7 to the north, the CP Rail line to the south, The Rouge River to the west, and the West Duffin Creek to the east.

Bill 66 titled, “Restoring Ontario’s Competitiveness Act” has many different aspects to it, including allowing municipalities the ability to create by-laws which can lead the way to development within the greenbelt – including the Preserve.

Provincial Issues Have Local Impact in North Pickering
Residents Tutor New Cast of Candidates in Pickering-Uxbridge

Whitevale, ON, June 3, 2018: Thursday will mark the 13th provincial election since the North Pickering expropriation of 1972. The controversy surrounding these lands continues even decades after families were stripped of their homes and hopes by both the federal and provincial governments of the day.

“The governments have changed but the issues remain the same,” says Sandy Rider, long-time resident of Whitevale, “it’s almost as if the governments hope the issues will be forgotten as we die away – but in North Pickering that will never be the case!”

In an effort to ensure that these issues are not forgotten, the Whitevale & District Residents’ Association (WDRA) will be hosting a “Meet the Candidates” event on June 5th at 7:30 pm at the Whitevale Community Centre. This gathering will provide a venue for residents to bring candidates up-to-speed and for the candidates to share their personal and party views on these issues that will impact not only Pickering residents, but residents throughout the eastern/north-eastern GTA. This evening is meant to be a casual, non-combative opportunity for open dialogue with all Pickering-Uxbridge candidates (except the Liberal candidate who will not be present).

“Our residents have spent more than four decades working with governments at all levels in an effort to see the best case scenario come from the cruel expropriation,” exclaimed Julie Schembri, President of the WDRA. “The real challenge has been that with every change of government comes a complete change of direction”

Construction is underway on current plans for North Pickering that will see the addition of 30,000 new residents over the next five years. This number will grow to over 70,000 by the time development is complete. This means an almost doubling of population of the City of Pickering with very little change to the local and surrounding infrastructure and available services.

“After all these years, North Pickering continues to be powder keg ready to blow,” added Schembri. “You can’t create a new community the size of Sarnia, in such short timeframe, without careful planning and funding for infrastructure and services. We need to ensure that our provincial representative keeps North Pickering on the map at Queen’s Park.”

As we all know, Whitevale continues to be situated at the heart of so many provincial issues and the WDRA believes it’s essential that we hear first-hand from the candidates, their views on the issues most important to us.  This informal ‘mix & mingle’ event (including refreshments) is meant to be a casual, non-combative opportunity for everyone to ask their questions either one-on-one or in a group (no speeches, statements or grandstanding).

Also for early risers… follow the wonderful aroma of freshly baked goodies to our legendary Bake Sale in the centre of town featuring our villagers’ homemade pastries, pies, cakes and breads. The most delectable goodies go first so come early!

The Church Yard is the site of events throughout the day. The Souvlaki Gourmet will once again be in operation, offering delectable Greek specialties along with burgers and dogs. Enjoy tea and goodies in the Tea Garden in the west side yard.

Craft displays by our local artists will be on view throughout the village. Find a favourite title at our well-stocked Book Fair. Drop in to our Whitevale Arts and Culture Centre.

Down at Whitevale Park a whole world of activities await visitors of all ages.

Local musicians will be featured throughout the day on our Festival Stage. At our Hospitality Beer Garden you can quench your thirst with beer and wine.
