Provincial Issues Have Local Impact in North Pickering

Provincial Issues Have Local Impact in North Pickering
Residents Tutor New Cast of Candidates in Pickering-Uxbridge

Whitevale, ON, June 3, 2018: Thursday will mark the 13th provincial election since the North Pickering expropriation of 1972. The controversy surrounding these lands continues even decades after families were stripped of their homes and hopes by both the federal and provincial governments of the day.

“The governments have changed but the issues remain the same,” says Sandy Rider, long-time resident of Whitevale, “it’s almost as if the governments hope the issues will be forgotten as we die away – but in North Pickering that will never be the case!”

In an effort to ensure that these issues are not forgotten, the Whitevale & District Residents’ Association (WDRA) will be hosting a “Meet the Candidates” event on June 5th at 7:30 pm at the Whitevale Community Centre. This gathering will provide a venue for residents to bring candidates up-to-speed and for the candidates to share their personal and party views on these issues that will impact not only Pickering residents, but residents throughout the eastern/north-eastern GTA. This evening is meant to be a casual, non-combative opportunity for open dialogue with all Pickering-Uxbridge candidates (except the Liberal candidate who will not be present).

“Our residents have spent more than four decades working with governments at all levels in an effort to see the best case scenario come from the cruel expropriation,” exclaimed Julie Schembri, President of the WDRA. “The real challenge has been that with every change of government comes a complete change of direction”

Construction is underway on current plans for North Pickering that will see the addition of 30,000 new residents over the next five years. This number will grow to over 70,000 by the time development is complete. This means an almost doubling of population of the City of Pickering with very little change to the local and surrounding infrastructure and available services.

“After all these years, North Pickering continues to be powder keg ready to blow,” added Schembri. “You can’t create a new community the size of Sarnia, in such short timeframe, without careful planning and funding for infrastructure and services. We need to ensure that our provincial representative keeps North Pickering on the map at Queen’s Park.”

Meet the 2018 Provincial Election Candidates

Mark your calendars neighbours!  The Whitevale & District Residents’ Association (WDRA) is proud to host a “Meet the Candidates” evening on June 5th at 7:30 pm.

As we all know, Whitevale continues to be situated at the heart of so many provincial issues and the WDRA believes it’s essential that we hear first-hand from the candidates, their views on the issues most important to us.  This informal ‘mix & mingle’ event (including refreshments) is meant to be a casual, non-combative opportunity for everyone to ask their questions either one-on-one or in a group (no speeches, statements or grandstanding).

Here’s what you need to know:

Date: Tuesday, June 5, 2018

Time: 7:30 pm

Location: Whitevale Community Centre

We’re pleased to report that “almost” all candidates of the Pickering-Uxbridge riding have agreed to attend. Confirmed candidates include:

  • Peter Bethlenfalvy, PCs
  • Nerissa Cariño, NDP
  • Adam Narraway, Green Party and
  • Brendan Reilly, Libertarian

So note this important date in your calendar folks. We kindly ask that you let us know if you think you may be able to attend as it helps us plan the refreshments.  You can RSVP via email or through the Facebook Event created for this meeting.  Please feel free to share this notice with your friends and neighbours who live in the Pickering-Uxbridge riding.

We look forward to seeing you then!

2018 Whitevale Easter Egg Hunt

The annual Whitevale Easter Egg hunt was again enjoyed by all. From the hand-crafted baskets to the community-made chocolate eggs, the activities spanned the entire week culminating in the big hunt at the park. The festivities started the Sunday before where the children and their parents gathered at the community centre to create their baskets – there are clearly some very creative minds developing in our village. Later in the week, folks (young and not so-young) gathered at the community centre once again to whip together a mix of butter, cream cheese, icing sugar and chocolate to create the much sought after treats. It was a terrific opportunity for the next generation to learn the traditional way to make the these old-time favourites.

Finally the day of the hunt! Although the morning was brisk, more than 50 folks participated. Held off at the starting line until given the go-ahead, the kids clamoured in excitement. Once released they scrambled through the park in the quest to find the colour coded plastic eggs, these eggs where then traded in for the coveted confection.

The tradition of memories continues….
